Coffee culture has become an integral part of our daily lives and social interactions. For us, the ritual of enjoying an espresso or a cappuccino transcends mere caffeine consumption, it is a cherished tradition. This tradition fosters a sense of community and connection with others. That’s where coffee shops come into play!
While we appreciate that early morning coffee at home, there is something special about going to a real coffee shop. For us, coffee shops serve not only as social hubs for meeting friends but also as places to come together. We choose to visit coffee shops not only to enjoy a hot drink and cake but also to read our books and work on our digital businesses.
Discover below our top 3 favourite coffee shops in East London!
1. CHAOS London
Do you love that community feeling? You are walking down the street, passing by a coffee shop, and the staff inside waves at you with a smile and a greeting. Yes, this is the place!
This was one of the reasons why we went to this coffee shop in the first place. Also, their sign at the door caught our attention: “Free coffee and also false advertising.” Clever, huh?
Why this coffee shop?
There’s nothing like supporting a local business, especially when the staff is extremely welcoming and friendly. It doesn’t matter how busy they are, they always have a happy face. I don’t know about you, but for us, this is the type of place we prefer!
They opened at the beginning of this year, and the owner also owns the gym next to the coffee shop. So you can go for a coffee and snack at CHAOS first and then go for a workout with your partner.
By the way, you might be lucky enough to have a picture of yourself and your partner on their wall. They take pictures of their customers and put them on display (with your permission, of course!).
Ambiance and decor
CHAOS London is a charmingly small and cozy coffee shop that captivates visitors with its striking black walls adorned with lush green plants. The contrast creates an inviting and unique atmosphere, perfectly blending urban chic with a touch of nature.
Inside, CHAOS London features small tables paired with beachy chairs, regular chairs, and even a small couch, creating an ideal spot for a drink and a chat or to dive into a good book. For those looking to get some work done, there’s a large communal table perfect for setting up your laptop. When the London weather allows, you can opt for the outdoor seating.
Highlights
- The nicest staff ever! – One day, almost reaching home after a busy day at work, we were really craving banana bread, even though it was already past 5 o’clock. They were closing the coffee shop, but they were so nice that they let us come in for a delicious piece of cake. We believe that our facial expressions conveyed our strong desire for it that afternoon 🙂
- Banana bread with dark chocolate – Definitely our favourite. It tastes even better when they toast it
- Their playlist is always on point
- Exceptional coffee quality – Their coffee is very tasty. If you would like, you can also buy their coffee bags and use at home
- Homely environment – It is that kind of coffee shop you would love to have near your place, a local business that makes you feel at home
- This place smells divine – We have no clue what kind of products do they use but the coffee place smells amazing. Even the soap available in the restroom smells beautifully.

2. Town House
You’ve already been to CHAOS and you decide to go for a walk towards Spitalfields. Cross the road in front of the pub “Ten Bells”, and you’ll find this place.
Why this coffee shop?
Town House is an antique shop, gallery, and coffee shop housed in a Georgian building dating back to the early 18th century. This charming spot offers more than just coffee, it includes a gallery space, an antique shop, and a bakery, creating a unique atmosphere.
Ambiance and decor
As soon as you enter Town House, you step directly into their antique shop. Here, you can find small decor ornaments for your home, such as first book editions, vintage maps, ceramics, and other vintage accessories. You will always find a friendly face welcoming you to this place 🙂
After browsing the shop, you can head to their gorgeous outdoor area, where you can grab a seat, have a coffee, and enjoy the art gallery. They host regular exhibitions by contemporary artists, and during the summer, Town House Open features works by both new and known artists.
After picking up a new home ornament and appreciating the art, it’s time to go downstairs (be mindful of the small and narrow steps). There, you’ll find their old and cozy kitchen where they sell homemade cakes. Their banana bread is delicious, and they have Queen cakes made from a very old recipe (highly recommended!).
It’s time to sit in their room, where the decor is thoughtfully designed to reflect the historic nature of the building, with antique furniture, vintage lighting fixtures, and an array of curiosities that transport visitors back in time. It is a small room, perfect for a quiet reading session or an intimate chat – a place where you know you won’t be disturbed.
Highlights
- A hidden gem that combines history, art, and homemade cakes
- Eclectic decor – The interior is a mix of vintage and modern elements, with exposed brick walls, rustic wooden beams, and antique furniture

3. Coffee Matters
After leaving Town House, you decide to stroll around Brick Lane. When you reach the end of the road you’d like to find a place to sit in the neighborhood. That’s when you step into Coffee Matters.
Why this coffee shop?
We stumbled upon Coffee Matters randomly while walking around the area, and it immediately caught our attention! It’s more than just a coffee shop, it’s a community hub where quality and atmosphere come together.
Ambiance and decor
While there’s an outdoor area in front of the coffee shop, it was the indoors that caught our attention. Coffee Matters is also a gallery, featuring rotating exhibitions from local artists. This provides a platform for creative expression and gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy and purchase unique artwork. They change their art frequently, and during festive times, they showcase art from young artists. For instance, during Christmas, they had a Christmas tree made with pieces of wood from one of the baristas’ children. How cool is that?
Coffee Matters is also a place where you can enjoy a delicious meal, ranging from breakfast and brunch to lunch options. It’s a great spot to meet a friend for a catch-up or bring your laptop to work.
They have two rooms: a smaller one as soon as you enter, and a larger one downstairs. You’ll find small tables as well as a larger communal table where you can work. The downstairs area is quieter, making it an ideal place to bring your laptop and get some work done, especially since the coffee shop is open until the evening.
Highlights
- Rotating exhibitions and art for sale – Coffee Matters regularly changes its exhibitions, showcasing the work of local and emerging artists. This provides a fresh and inspiring experience with each visit
- Creative workshops – Occasionally they host art-related events and workshops. You can also find information about other workshops in the area though brochures and leaflets in their coffee shop
- Coffee shop interior – Combining rustic charm with modern touches, this place creates a cozy yet vibrant atmosphere that’s perfect for relaxing or working
- Diverse menu – From simple pastries to brunch and lunch options, you’ll find a variety of choices to suit your taste
- Open until late – If you are looking to change your work from home scenery, this is the place to be. The downstairs area is quieter, and you can work there comfortably until 7 pm
