Christmas is “the most wonderful time of the year” 🎡 especially when it comes to Christmas dates. This holiday season brings us into a contagious spirit of happiness that transcends age, cultural backgrounds, and beliefs. Christmas is a season of generosity and kindness (however does not mean that you shouldn’t be kind the rest of the year 😊) whether it’s through charitable acts, volunteering, or simply spreading compassion for others.

It’s time for connection! Christmas brings family and friends together (going home for Christmas is a must for us!), fostering a sense of unity and creating moments that become cherished memories. From decorating the Christmas tree, to religious traditions, and culinary delights, each tradition carries a sense of continuity, linking generations and providing a comforting familiarity that adds to the warmth of the season.

There’s an undeniable magic that fills the air. For both of us, it is synonymous of joy and love. We love giving presents to each other, which does not mean spending a whole lot of money in a gift. We rather spend our time planning for something that we both can enjoy and strengthen our bond as a couple – it can be a custom made present, an experience, or a trip to a special place.

So, why not share with you some of our Christmas dates?

Personalised decorations with a special touch

When it comes to holiday decorations, there’s something magical about adding a personal touch. This is something that brings us back to the way we grew up. Both of our mums love decorating the house with Christmas ornaments, so how could we not mention Christmas decorations?

However, you can embrace this in a distinct way. Forget the store-bought ornaments; let’s dive into the world of DIY and personalised decorations that will turn your home into a festive and unique place.

Crafting memories, not just decorations

Ornaments aren’t just shiny decorations; they’re memory keepers. Create personalised ornaments that tell your story. Maybe it’s a picture ornament capturing a special moment or a handcrafted ornament symbolising a shared interest. Every time you hang it on the tree, it’s a trip down to memory lane.

Personalised stockings creations

Stockings are more than just oversize socks waiting to be filled, they’re an opportunity for creative expression. Craft personalised stockings that reflect your personality πŸ™‚ Add initials, embroider inside jokes; they can even be tights instead of socks. You can also sew on patches that represent each family member.

Fun fact: The tradition of hanging stockings during Christmas originates from the legendary tale of Saint Nicholas and the Three Poor Maidens. In the story, St. Nicholas anonymously gifted gold coins to a poor man’s daughters by placing them in the stockings hanging by the fireplace to dry.

Your story on the front door

Don’t settle for a generic ornament, let your front door tell a story. Create a personalised wreath that showcases your family’s unique style. Maybe it’s a collection of mini photo frames, a wreath made from holiday cards, a wreath made from your trips or getaways together, or even a wreath of handwritten notes expressing gratitude for the season. Pretty sure it will be appealing to your neighbours πŸ˜‰

The advent calendar

Must-say: chocolate advent calendars are our favourite πŸ™‚ but have you ever thought about creating your own? Craft a DIY advent calendar personalised for your partner!!! You can fill each pocket with notes, small gifts, and even chocolates. You can craft it as a surprise or do it together – some days will be you filling in, and others will be your partner.

It’s a daily reminder of the joy you bring to each other’s lives.

DIY table settings

Elevate your holiday dining experience with personalised table settings. Craft your own cards, perhaps with festive calligraphy or miniature photo frames. Tie personalised tags around napkin rings, create centerpieces that reflect your shared interests, and create coaster for your wine glasses.

The polaroid wall: capturing moments, creating decor

Being part of the digital era is amazing, but we do miss going through photo albums. You can always bring that back to your home πŸ™‚ How about turning a wall into a visual timeline of your holiday memories? Create a Polaroid wall by capturing moments throughout the season. You can add captions for a personalised touch. Instead of being just a wall, it will be an evolving album of your shared experiences.

London lights and love: our top 5 Christmas dates nights in the city

After all these years living in London, it still feels like a dream. For us, it is still a vibrant and powerful city, always presenting us with thousands of different places to explore and to date. But London during Christmas… it’s super magical!!! The lights, the festive environment, and the different events are the perfect setting for creating magical memories with your partner.

Here are some unique and unforgettable Christmas dates night ideas that will make your London Christmas experience extra special.

Christmas dates at Kew Gardens: a botanical wonderland for two

Oh, Christmas at Kew is one of the best Christmas dates ever!!! We’ve been a couple of times, and it never disappoints. Kew Gardens itself is gorgeous any time of the year, but during Christmas, it has a special touch. The illuminated trails, glittering trees, music perfectly synced with the lights, and the iconic Palm House all create a magical setting for a romantic evening.

There will also be places inside where you can stop for all sorts of drinks (including the classic hot chocolate, mulled wine, and so on) and also for food (delicious waffles around there, by the way).

Points to consider:

  • Buy tickets in advance – Christmas at Kew Gardens exhibition is available from November until January, however the slots get filled very quickly (especially over the weekend). So, make sure you book them in advance to guarantee your space;
  • Plan your trip – Kew Gardens are located in West London and you should plan your trip wisely to make sure you get there on time for your slot;
  • Weather conditions – be prepared for the cold (mostly) and wet weather. Dress warmly and wear appropriate footwear, especially because the event is outdoors.

Recommendation: if possible, book your visit during the week so you can enjoy when is less crowed.

Ice skating

Ice skating is always super fun and challenging (definitely for us). In our case, it’s hilarious and challenging since skating is not one of our attributes πŸ˜‰ However, don’t be afraid if you also share the same feeling. You can always try and have some fun (you might fall, but it’s also part of the fun). You can skate and hold onto the penguins they have available πŸ˜‰

There are scenic ice skating rinks that are sooo worth the visit πŸ™‚ Some of our favourites:

  • Somerset House – surrounded by the stunning neoclassical architecture;
  • Canary Wharf – magical ice skating experience under sparkling lights in Canary Wharf, surrounded by London’s tallest skyscrapers;
  • Skylight – situated in a rooftop in East London. Ice skating and enjoying the view from above.

There are plenty more ice rinks in London, and some that used to be on our top list are permanently closed, such as the Natural History Museum and Tower of London Ice Rinks.

Recommendation: Once again, plan in advance. London is always busy, so we highly recommend checking ticket availability online.

The Nutcracker Ballet: a classic Christmas date night

London boasts a vast variety of theaters with different plays throughout the year. However, during this time of the year, why not immerse yourself in the timeless magic of The Nutcracker Ballet? The Royal Opera House is a stunning place to visit, coming alive with this classic Christmas tale, featuring graceful dancers and enchanting music.

Dazzling Christmas lights

This time of the year means that the days will be shorter, and consequently cooler. Sometimes, it is depressing because it is only 4 pm, and it is already dark. However, it is the perfect time to explore the Christmas lights!!! Below, we provide one of our recommendations for a perfect walk in the city center, along with a Google Maps link for your convenience.

  • Step out of the tube at Bond Street;
  • Walk until South Molton Street;
  • Keep walking until you reach New Bond Street and Old Bond Street (for those stunning Christmas displays);
  • Then turn into the Royal Arcade;
  • Take a left to Piccadilly and make a quick stop into the Burlington Arcade;
  • Before catching that gorgeous glimpse of the annual Fortnum and Mason displays;
  • Take a leisurely stroll along Regent Street, adorned with its iconic Christmas lights. It is stunning!!! Window-shop at the famous stores, and let the dazzling lights guide your way.

Christmas markets

London transforms into a winter wonderland during the festive season, and we absolutely adore how Christmas markets make the city sparkle. Whether you’re a local looking for a cozy escape or a visitor eager to experience the markets, they offer a mix of treats, treasures, and twinkling lights.

There are so many around the city that it becomes a difficult task to choose. If you take that stroll for Christmas lights, you can also stop to enjoy the market in Leicester Square (smaller than others, in the middle of the square but always a nice pit stop) or enjoy the market in Covent Garden.

We always enjoy a walk around the Thames river, and if you are a big fan, during this time of the year, you will be able to walk along those Christmas markets: set against stunning views of Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, Borough Market, and Southbank Centre Winter Market – traditional wooden chalets lining the banks of the Thames.

If you would like to explore another area, you can also go to Greenwich Christmas market or even a bit further away to Kingston Christmas market.

Highly recommend indulging your taste in a jingle of Christmas delights such as sweet mince pies, ginger cookies, a warm cup of hot chocolate (with marshmallows gently melting on the top), or a mulled wine as you explore along.

Quality over quantity in Christmas

When it comes to Christmas dates, quality always trumps quantity. Instead of cramming your schedule with a checklist of activities, choose a few that resonate deeply. It’s not about how many events you attend but the richness of the experience πŸ™‚

This Christmas season, let your date nights sparkle with creativity and joy. Whether you opt for a cozy evening together at home, ice skating, or exploring some of London’s Christmas markets. We really wish some of our Christmas dates add a touch of magic to yours.

So, grab your partner, seize the day by embracing the festive spirit, and jingle all the way to unforgettable memories!!!
