After all these years living in London, it still feels like a dream. For us, London remains a vibrant and dynamic city, constantly offering new places to explore and enjoy. But London during Christmas… we must admit, it’s even more magical!
Here are 10 activities to enjoy this Christmas in London that will make this time of year truly special.
1. Christmas at Kew Gardens
We’ve visited a couple of times, and it’s still our favourite time of year to go. The illuminated trails, glittering trees, music perfectly synchronized with the lights, and the iconic Palm House all create a magical setting for a romantic evening.
Must do
- Buy tickets in advance – The Christmas at Kew Gardens exhibition runs from November to January, but the slots fill up quickly (especially on weekends). Be sure to book early to secure your spot,
- Plan your trip – Kew Gardens is located in West London, so plan your journey to make sure you arrive on time for your booked slot,
- Weather conditions – Be prepared for cold and potentially wet weather. Dress warmly and wear suitable footwear.

2. Leadenhall Market walking tour
Leadenhall Market is one of London’s oldest markets, dating back to the 14th century. Known for its stunning Victorian architecture, walkways, elegant arches, and a beautiful glass roof, it truly comes alive during Christmas with gorgeous ornaments and lights.
This is a limited-edition tour with only a few dates and limited tickets, so hurry up and book yours!

3. The most delicious hot chocolate
We’ve been to this charming shop, Dark Sugars, on Brick Lane for years. We definitely recommend trying their variety of chocolates and truffles, but their hot chocolate is absolutely delicious!
Made with melted chocolate (not just powder), it’s topped with shavings of their signature dark, milk, and white chocolate. Served steaming hot, it’s the perfect way to warm up while exploring the vibrant streets of East London.
4. Explore Columbia Road
Columbia Road is best known for its Flower Market on Sundays, a great place to buy plants and flowers – especially if you visit after 1 pm when you’ll find the best deals. However, we recommend visiting on a day other than Sunday. That’s right!
We recently went on a Saturday, and the road was much quieter. Columbia Road takes on a special charm in the winter, with Christmas trees, festive decorations, cozy cafes, and cute little shops.
5. Pub Christmas dinner by the fireplace
There’s nothing quite like cozying up in a traditional London pub, enjoying hearty Christmas food by the warmth of a crackling fireplace. You can opt for one of London’s most historic pubs such as Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, where you might even be lucky enough to sit where Dr. Johnson or Charles Dickens once sat.
If you prefer a quieter, less touristy spot, head to one of our favorites, The Approach Tavern.
Note: London is always busy during the holidays, so be sure to book in advance to secure a table.
Fun Fact: Dr. Johnson is best known for compiling A Dictionary of the English Language (1755), which had a huge impact on English literature and lexicography, shaping the development of the language.

6. Explore the amazing Christmas lights display
As the days grow shorter and cooler, it can feel a bit gloomy – especially when it’s 4 pm and already dark. But it’s also the perfect time to explore London’s stunning Christmas light displays!
Here’s one of our favourite walks in the city center, with a convenient Google Maps link for your ease:
- Step out of the tube at Bond Street,
- Walk until South Molton Street,
- Keep walking until you reach New Bond Street and Old Bond Street (for those stunning Christmas displays),
- Then turn into the Royal Arcade,
- Take a left to Piccadilly and make a quick stop into the Burlington Arcade,
- Before catching that gorgeous glimpse of the annual Fortnum and Mason displays,
- Take a leisurely stroll along Regent Street, adorned with its iconic Christmas lights. It is stunning! Window-shop at the famous stores, and let the dazzling lights guide your way.

7. Wander around Christmas markets
London transforms into a winter wonderland during the festive season, and we absolutely adore how the Christmas markets make the city sparkle.
There are so many markets across the city, it can be tough to choose. If you’re exploring the Christmas lights, you can also stop to enjoy the market in Leicester Square (smaller but always a nice pit stop) or the one in Covent Garden.
If you are walking along the Thames, you’ll pass by markets near Tate Modern Museum, London Bridge and South Bank. If you prefer something more mainstream and crowded, Winter Wonderland is the place to go, with tickets available to buy. Alternatively, you can explore lesser-known markets like Greenwich Christmas Market or Kingston Christmas Market.

8. Ski (or fall) together
Ice skating is always fun (and a little challenging, especially for us!). Don’t worry if skating isn’t for you – we all fall, and that’s part of the fun! Penguins are available to hold into.
8.1. Somerset House
We recently visited Somerset House, and it’s such a gorgeous spot. You’ll be skating surrounded by stunning neoclassical architecture. Afterward, warm up with a drink – either hot chocolate or mulled wine.
Fun Fact: Somerset House was originally built in the late 18th century as a government building. It now serves as a cultural hub, hosting a variety of events, including art exhibitions, live performances, and workshops.
8.2. Canary Wharf
For a magical ice skating experience under sparkling lights, head to Canary Wharf, surrounded by London’s tallest skyscrapers.
8.3 Skylight Tobacco Dock
Situated in a rooftop in East London. We invite you to do Ice skating there and enjoy the view from above.
9. Christmas at Shakespeare’s Globe
Step inside London’s only candlelit theatre! We’ve seen plays at Shakespeare’s Globe before, but this year will be our first time experiencing it during Christmas. At this time of year, the Globe often features a Christmas-themed Shakespeare play or a seasonal production inspired by Elizabethan celebrations. Popular choices include A Winter’s Tale or adaptations of festive classics.
There are also productions like Hansel and Gretel (which we’ll be watching!). You can buy seating tickets or standing tickets (much cheaper, between 5-10£).
Important tips: Dress warmly! The theatre is open-air, and be sure to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
